Creating Your Google Adwords Account

The first step is to get started, simple. Creating your Google Adwords account is very easy and Google has streamlined the process.

If you visit their website, Google Adwords, you will be prompted to click the “Get Started” Button. There will be a few things you need here:

  1. A Google email account that is not associated with another Adwords account.
  2. The time zone you want the account reporting and billing to operate on.
  3. The Country you serve ads in
  4. The currency you want to be associated with your account.

You won’t be able to change these settings later, so choose carefully. Now I’ll take you through the process of setting up your account.

Step 1: Visit Google Adwords sign up landing page and click start now button.

How To Setup The Basics Of Your New Google Adwords Account

Once you’ve created your Adwords account there are a few things you need to do before setting up campaigns and ads.

These steps are important and will help you to get started on the right track.

Setting up Google Adwords

With most things in life, there are a few things you don’t like doing. Unfortunately, Adwords is no exception. Let’s get these items set up quickly.

Set up Payment & Billing

Set up your billing on your preferred credit card.

Step 1: Navigate to the spanner (1), from the drop down click on Billing and payments

Step 4: Put in your Payment Method (1), accept the terms & conditions (2) and Submit

Add users and delegate permission settings

Step 1: Navigate to the spanner icon (1), then click on Account Access

Step 2: Click the blue plus symbol to add new users

Step 3: Set a permission for the new user (more on this below) (1), enter their email address (2) then invite them to the account.

Level of access options explained:

  • Administrative access: Manage all aspects of the account and give people access
  • Standard access: Make changes to campaigns and give people email only access
  • Read only access: View campaigns and run reports.
  • Email only access: Receive account alerts and reports via email.

Set up notifications to preferred user/email

Step 1: Navigate to the spanner icon (1), then click on Preferences

Step 2: Choose your preference for notifications. I’d recommended, “receiving all” for available options because they are all useful.

Things To Consider

Now you’ve set up the basics of your Google Adwords account there are some things you must consider.

  • How much should you spend?
  • Who will manage the account
  • What are the key performance indicators (KPIs)

Let’s explore these a little further.

Thing #1 – Your daily budget

How much can you afford to spend on Google Adwords? You should base this on the potential return from your ad spend.

But if you want to set your budget monthly you can work your daily spend with a simple formula:

Monthly budget / 30.4 = daily budget

Depending on your industry you might want to consider if fewer people are searching on weekends and allocate a little bit more daily.

Thing #2 – Who will manage the account

Once your campaigns are set up and running you need to constantly manage the account. This can be very time consuming. You need to decide whether you’ll do it yourself, employ someone or outsource.

Managing an account successful requires experience so if you are new to Adwords it’s best to get some help with management. Even if it’s high level consulting while you manage the account.

Thing #3 – KPIs

Having goals and measuring if you’re meeting them is also very important. You should review your goals on a monthly basis to ensure that your Google Adwords account is performing.

You should be looking at numbers, such as cost per conversion, monthly spend and if there are any drops in clicks.

Keeping an eye on these things will help to keep your account in good health and performing for your business.
